Dear Parents/Carers,
The school fete is over for another year. It truly is a celebration of community life and through supporting the fete, no matter in what way (bringing the family, working on a stall, providing gift boxes, cakes and slices or the many other requests), you, the parent community are giving your children their St Paul’s story. In fact, I call it their rite of passage! When they leave the school, it is my wish that every child can tell a story about a staff member who genuinely cared about them as a young person (hopefully more than one). They won’t remember how inspiring their maths lesson was or their Word Sort during spelling activities. They will remember people they related to AND the St Paul’s Fete, where one day a year all school bureaucracy and rules aren’t there and each child can be truly free.
I’m also drawn to how important the quality of relationships between teachers and parents are. Such relationships call for tolerance, mutual respect for the position and perspectives of others, so critical in the planning leading up to fete day. Fete day enables the staff and parents to practise this very important skill as all look beyond self and take responsibility for our communities development.
Finally, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the work of the fete committee. It takes about six months to plan for our big day each year, please know your work is noticed and deeply respected.
On another matter, last Wednesday Mrs Mangiapane came to me to say that there was a man in the office who wanted to meet with me. It was out of the blue, he was a former student at a previous school where I was principal. The man in question is now 24, struggled at school with his learning, but has a trade and is making his way in the world. His family had moved into the area and he sort me out. What he was really doing is acknowledging the very essence which I shared with you in the above. I had a year 5 student with me at the time, telling me about his trip overseas, back to Croatia to spend time with his extended family. I looked at the student in the room with me after Robert left (the former student) and said to him, this is exactly what we are doing now. I wanted the student to know that it was more than just his visit to Croatia that I was interested in. I wanted him to know that I genuinely cared about him as a young person and his interests were my interests.
Never take for granted the impact we have on the formation of young people. They grow into adults and some will come back and share their story with you as men and women.
Go Gently,
Michael Reardon

Student Illness
Please do not send your child to school if they are sick.
Attendance Notes
For any whole day absence, parents will need to access their Compass parent portal and log the absence before 11am on the day their child is not at school. If you fail to do this you will receive a Compass alert requesting that you explain your child’s absence on the day your child is away. The school must receive notification of the reason for the absence within 7 days of the return to school. In the event that an explanation is not supplied the absence will be recorded as Unjustified/Unexplained.
Partial Absences
Please do not enter an attendance note if your child has a partial absence (eg; arriving late or leaving early). These will be entered by office staff when you are in the foyer to drop off or collect your children.
At St Paul’s I will let my peers learn. ‘Stop, Think, then Choose what to do.’
'Respect' means treating everyone and everything with care. The golden rule is to treat others the way you would like to be treated. Over weeks 5 and 6, students are learning how they can show respect for their classmates in many ways – how you speak to your peers, how you behave towards them, being organised, not disturbing lessons and how you look after your belongings and the personal belongings of others. Everyone is happier and more productive when people show respect to one another at school.
Children who show respect and are shown respect:
- Feel safe around their peers and their teacher
- Don’t yell or talk over others
- Listen to others even when they disagree
- Don’t try to control others
- Talk openly about their needs and wants
- Admit when they’ve made a mistake
- Freely express who they are and allow others to do the same.
Students are being taught that when they are in the classroom, to be mindful of their peers and their learning and how certain choices they make, such as calling out, not being organised and needing to borrow items from classmates or making noises, can be distracting and impact upon the learning of others. Students are being reminded to stop and think about choices they make in the classroom, how this may impact upon their classmates and deciding on what would be the best choice to make.
Truth Love and Faith Awards
This award reflects the vision towards which the school consistently strives, that which is embodied in its motto of Truth, Love and Faith. It is through the motto that students are continually encouraged to strive to do their best, therefore deeply embedding the ongoing spiritual, academic and social interactions students have each day whilst at school.
The Truth Love Faith award is the formal recognition of students’ commitment to Catholic learning, belonging, celebration, hope, respect and justice. This includes achievements, appropriate behaviour and consistently doing their best.
The Truth Love Faith Awards will be presented to students in Terms 2 & 4 and will be followed by recipients attending a morning tea with Mr Reardon.
The Truth Love and Faith Awards in Term 2 will be week 7, Friday, 14 June 2024.
