From the Principal's Desk

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are finally in a place to be able to share with you some of the NAPLAN analysis completed by the school for this year.  It appears almost like two separate schools when you view the data for Grade 3 and Grade 5. The Grade 5 data indicates a school that is performing above diocesan average in 3 areas (reading, spelling, grammar/punctuation), and only slightly below in two areas (writing and numeracy). Such data was consistent with the results we were achieving prior to COVID. Our Year 3 data, indicates that it has largely been the infants school, where the formative years are, that have been impacted by COVID the most. We are still trying to turn this around. A significant impact has been the absenteeism rate at St Paul’s during this period, which has been discussed in previous newsletters and I will be presenting some “challenging” data that we have been gathering in the next newsletter to deepen further the understanding of the impact this “hunch” has presented us.

What are we going to do to address the challenge presented
by the data?

Year 3
Literacy
Focus areas: characterisation in imaginative texts, use of pronouns in informative texts, identifying the word class of a word in sentences and antonyms.

Numeracy
Focus areas: representing numbers in a variety of ways, establishing and identifying repeating patterns in numbers, chance, interpreting tables, features of 2D shapes and mass.

Year 5
Literacy

Focus areas: characterisation in imaginative texts, spelling multisyllabic words, identifying the main clause in a complex sentence and punctuating/identifying indirect speech.

Numeracy
Focus areas: using multiplication facts to solve problems, chance, interpreting tables, analysis of rotations.

The above summaries become the focus points for Yrs K-3 and Yrs 4-6 respectively for the rest of the year.  Each grade will know through their own assessments whether these areas are also problematic for their grades and if so, will be reteaching or revisiting these areas. There are some common threads evident in both the Grade 3 and Grade 5 data sets: characterisation in imaginative texts, number facts and problem solving (especially in the primary), chance and the language of mathematics.

The above common areas will need a more strategic approach and the literacy and numeracy teams will be determining the additional professional learning required by the teachers and how to successfully factor this into changes in practice or focus areas for 2023/24. Whilst this is only one form of assessment, the critical part is validating the assumptions through the use of other assessment forms.

Finally, this challenge becomes an even greater one when the students are not present. This is where we need your support. This data will be presented in the next newsletter.
